Beware of Signage

Beware of Signage is a four-part mini-book series with various self-written signs focused on semiotics and environment (with a subtitle “An exposé on awareness”). Each mini-book was printed and folded on a one-sided paper sheet folded into an eight-page book. Using photography, I produced temporarily public commentary with the posting of mimicked public information signs. Text displayed in a standardized typeface, Helvetica, put into signage format has a connotation of authority, as the US government uses the clarity of Helvetica for much of their collateral. Pairing the blatant or the unexpected message with an environment evokes a paradoxical and enriched connotation.

Temporary signs included but were not limited to: “This Is Not an Exit; This Is Not an Approved Fire Escape” “Parking Zone; Watched for Stopped Vehicles,” and “This Is Not a Parking Space.” This a form of legal graffiti–a removable object occupies a public space, cause no harm to other objects, building, or neighborhoods. Nothing was defaced or destroyed in the making of this project.

Showcased are the covers, foldout view, and final interiors.
